The digital experience at Cheddar Gorge – an ancient limestone gorge in Somerset, and site where the 9,000-year old ‘Cheddar Man’ skeleton was discovered – uses cutting-edge projection and audiovisual technology to narrate the story of the caves and the humans who used them. The 100-metre walkthrough show, Dreamhunters – The Adventures Of Early Man, takes place in the eight chambers of the attraction’s smaller Cox’s Cave, using 16 Casio projectors to create a wraparound video experience. LCI Productions worked with Casio’s short-throw projectors to create customised content that was carefully mapped to accommodate the textures and shapes of the rock faces and cave walls. A unique challenge of the project was installing the digital journey without disturbing the natural features and intricate formations of the caves. Signal and power were installed from scratch over a period of 57 days, with the team laying down many kilometres of fibre-optic, audio, mains and DMX cables in order to negotiate the natural shapes of the eight chambers. “There is not a straight edge in this place,” said LCI Productions designer Rob Paul. “And one of the other challenges we hadn’t fully appreciated was the acoustic element of the caves, so we put in additional treatments [such as soundproofed flooring] to create the best guest experience.” Supplier: LCI Ltd London UK LCI Ltd is experienced in the creation of stunning displays of light, visual image and sound, captivating audiences the world over.
