Major drainage work at Chepstow Racecourse was completed by early August despite torrential rain which left neighbouring areas under water.

Although the work was delayed, Oxford-based Speedcut Contractors worked through the gaps in the weather to complete a contract which saw the installation of gravel and sand slits from the last fence to the road crossing.

Tim Long, clerk of the course at both Chepstow and Bath racecourses, commented: "Being close to the River Severn, heavy rain during the winter months is quite normal. And this summer we have had the same rainfall that has hit the whole region.

"But we pride ourselves on keeping the tracks up to scratch with a constant programme of maintenance."

Chepstow, which is on clay loam, is a jump and flat racecourse with 14 fixtures from May to September and 16 from October until the end of April.

It has its own small verti-drainer but can only do surface remedial tasks. For major work it relies on contractors such as Speedcut.
