Due to erosion of its surface on the slope and landing area, Wielka Krokiew - in the southern Polish ski resort of Zakopane - lost its FIS certificate and was unable to host international competitions.

To regain it, the authorities - Centralny Osrodek Sportu - had to rebuild the surface of the landing area where there was most wear, necessary because the erosion had created an uneven surface, which could result in falls on landing. The opportunity was also taken of improving the profile of the slope slightly.

After completing the earthworks on the slope profile, the whole landing slope was covered with 6cm of topsoil. A Tensar Mat - a flexible 3-dimensional product made from polyethylene and designed to initially stabilise the surface and then provide long-term reinforcement of the root system - was then rolled out over the topsoil and secured.

Grass seed was then sown into it and a final thin layer of topsoil was applied for the grass to grow into and through.

The solution was subsequently accepted and the ski jump was able to gain a new FIS certificate in time for the next season.
