With nearly 50 per cent of businesses reported to currently allow smoking in the workplace - which includes restaurants, cafes and pubs - the government's decision to ban smoking in all workplaces in England by summer 2007 could present a problem for employers.
The No Butts Bin Company, claimed to be a world leader in smoking and litter control products, says that businesses need to be considering how to accommodate the 25 per cent of the workforce which smokes.
MD Martyn Bright, says: "There are a number of problems that employers will face as a result of the ban and these include an increase in people smoking on the streets and outside the premises; disgruntled employees as a result of being sent outside; plus, of course, the environmental issues.
"Cigarette butts account for 40 per cent of litter in the UK and, as cigarette filters can take up to 12 years to degrade, no company want butts littering entrances and affecting visitor perception of its operation. Businesses now need to consider providing external facilities which are undercover, and well-ventilated with litter bins."
Established in 1992, The No Butts Bin Company saw the development of the first-ever cigarette bin, which has now been expanded into a range of 13 different styles.
Made of stainless steel, the bins have a patented internal baffle which extinguishes cigarettes as they fall, and are simple and easy to maintain. They are also constructed with special locks and fixings to deter terrorists, thieves and vandals.
The company also produces the Smokescreen Shelter and will supply one of its Tower Bins free with every shelter. No Butts products can be seen at, amongst other sites, the Empire State Building, NASA, Heathrow airport, Waterloo station and the Canary Wharf Tower.
