The first phase of construction on the Malley Sports Center – a 10,000-capacity complex taking shape in Lausanne, Switzerland is expected to wrap in August.

Designed by Swiss architecture office Pont12, the multipurpose building will serve as a venue for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic games (YOG) and the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships, which will be held in 2021.

Leisure facilities at Malley will include three ice rinks, a restaurant, bar, table tennis areas, a fencing centre, diving and freestyle pools, and a 50-metre, Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Commissioned in 2015 by the municipalities of Lausanne, Prilly, and Renens in consultation with Switzerland's Council of State, the project is expected to complete the final stage of construction by the end of the year.

The opening ceremony for the Olympic games is scheduled for 9 January 2020.

The 23-day tournament will feature 1,900 competitors from over 80 countries and is expected to serve as an inspiration to the country's young athletes.

"We want to put the best our country has to offer in terms of innovation, education, and sports to inspire our youth here, and around the world," said Virginie Faivre, president of the 2020 Olympic Organising Committee.

"We want to be the start of something great for them in their careers both on and off the field of play."
