Designs have been revealed for the third out of five stadiums being built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Multinational consultancy Dar Al-Handasah is behind the designs, which will see a complete revamp of Doha’s existing Khalifa International Stadium.

Dar Al-Handasah, run by the Dar Group, operates as an international consultancy with five different design centres across the world. The group intends to transform the dated Khalifa International Stadium, originally constructed in 1976, into a 40,000 seat venue, with the addition of a roof to cover the entire seating area.

There is much debate over whether the 2022 World Cup should take place in Qatar and it has recently been suggested that the Cup should be played in winter due to the region's extreme heat. Part of the new stadium's redevelopment would see innovative new cooling techniques integrated into the site to ensure an optimal playing and spectating temperature.

The masterplan of the stadium site also includes several other leisure facilities, such as a sports museum, retail areas, food courts and a health centre.
