New Acropolis Museum set for summer opening
POSTED 15 Apr 2009 . BY Luke Tuchscherer
The 130m euro (US$175m, £115m) New Acropolis Museum is set to open in Athens, Greece at the end of June.

The attraction boasts more than 150,000sq ft (13,935sq m) of exhibition space – 10 times more than the previous Acropolis museum – and will display surviving antiquities from the famous landmark.

The museum features galleries for the permanent collection, galleries for special exhibitions, a 200-seat auditorium, a multimedia space, a giftshop, a bar and a restaurant, as well as being surrounded by 75,000sq ft (6,967sq m) of landscaped gardens.

During pre-construction on the site, archaeologists discovered the remains of an ancient Athenian city, excavating more than 43,000sq ft (3,994sq m). The remains have been preserved and integrated into the museum’s design, which was undertaken by New York-based Bernard Tschumi Architects in association with Michael Photiadis of Athens.

Tschumi won the commission in 2001 as the result of a design competition.
