Mandarin Oriental unveils spa expansion plans
POSTED 24 Apr 2006 . BY
Following the opening of The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo in Japan, the hotel group has unveiled plans to open further spa facilities in Barcelona, Spain, Prague in the Czech Republic and Hong Kong.

Due to open this September, the Mandarin Oriental, Prague will boast a spa housed in a 14th century renaissance church – remnants of a gothic chapel excavation will be on show for guests under a glass floor.

The facility will boast seven treatment rooms, a relaxation area, water bar and outdoor seating. Products will be supplied by Aromatherapy Associates and treatments will include Mandarin Orientals signature experiences.

Elsewhere, the 144-room Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona is set to open in late 2007 on Paseo de Gracia and feature a spa with a rooftop pool as well as private treatment rooms offering water and heat therapies.

Meanwhile the US$140m (£78m, 113m euro) refurbishment of the Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong will be completed later this year with the introduction of a new spa inspired by 1930s Shanghai.

The hotel group recently opened its new day spa on the top two floors of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Tokyo, Japan.

Located on the 38th and 39th floors of the Cesar Pelli-designed tower, the 950sq m (10,225sq ft) Spa at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo – the first in the city to be open to local residents as well as hotel guests for no extra charge – boasts nine treatment rooms including five spa suites.

Therapies are based on Chinese, European, Mediterranean, Indian, Arabian and Thai traditions while the spa suites offer dedicated facilities for heat-based treatments such as feature baths, steam showers and Rasul.

Products used in the treatments have been supplied by Comfort Zone and Aromatherapy Associates as well as Mandarin Oriental’s signature line.

One of the facility’s signature offerings is the Time Ritual, for which guests book a period of time rather than a particular treatment. The experience includes a personalised assessment of the guest’s needs on the day to provide the ultimate treatment designed to ‘restore the body’s natural state of equilibrium’.

There is also a fitness centre offering a range of cv, strength and Pilates equipment supplied by Life Fitness and Peak Pilates Systems.

“We are very pleased to bring our expertise in spa design and operation to Japan’s sophisticated spa market, a market defined by its highly discriminating clientele,” said general manager Christian Hassings.

“We think consumers here will welcome and be excited by the unique wellness facilities and treatments that The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Tokyo will offer.” Details: www.mandarinoriental.com
