Global health club revenues grow, says report
POSTED 01 Jun 2017 . BY Deven Pamben
The reports said 201,000 health clubs served 162.1m members in 2016
The health club industry generated US$83.1bn (€74bn, £64.6bn) in revenue worldwide in 2016, slightly up on the previous year, according to an International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) report.

The 2017 IHRSA Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry shows that revenues were up from US$81bn (€72bn, £55bn) in 2015. Despite the rise, the latest figure was lower than US$84bn (€74m, £55m) in 2014.

The document also shows that 201,000 health clubs served 162.1m members in 2016, up from 187,000 clubs that provided services for 151.5m people in 2015.

The top 10 markets across the globe accounted for roughly two out of three health clubs and nearly three out of four members worldwide.

While the US leads all markets in club count and memberships at 57.2m and 36,540 respectively, Brazil is second in club count at 34,509, and Germany is second in number of members at 10.1m.

The leading markets in terms of revenue were the US in first (US$27.6bn (€24.6bn, £21.5bn)), the UK second (US$6.1bn (€5.4bn, £4.7bn)) and Germany third (US$5.6bn (€5bn, £4.4bn)).

Health club performance is also strong in Latin America, the report said. Based on data gathered, 18 countries in Latin America attracted 19.9m members at more than 65,000 health clubs last year. Opportunities for growth remain in the region as member penetration rates remain low in comparison with developed health club markets worldwide.

Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products, said: “This year’s report shows growth, led by top markets, along with a promising outlook for the industry in Latin America.”
