Burnham will address more than 1,000 delegates on Thursday 21 June
Former health secretary and current Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has been confirmed as the headline speaker at this year's Active Uprising event.

Burnham will address more than 1,000 delegates on Thursday 21 June, sharing his views on the importance of physical activity in building cohesive communities, and underlining how local government is "perfectly placed to help people build physical activity into their lives".

Other speakers at the event include Great Britain’s most successful female Olympian Laura Kenny, EXOS founder Mark Verstegen, and Mike Collier, the man behind McLaren Applied Technology’s Human Performance Centre of Excellence.

Organised by ukactive, Active Uprising is a multi-day celebration of physical activity and will take place in Manchester from 21 to 23 June.

The event will bring together five separate streams – boutique fitness event SWEAT North; startup accelerator ActiveLab; management and leadership programme Ignite; children's health initiative ukactive Kids; and Community, which examines how cross-sector partnerships can create healthy populations.

Burnham said: “Greater Manchester is delighted to welcome ukactive’s Active Uprising Conference in June. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work of the physical activity and sport sector in supporting happier, healthier and successful communities across the UK.

"It is also an opportunity to once again lift our sights, set new levels of ambition for our work and come together to shape future plans.

“Here in Greater Manchester, enabling more active lives is at the heart of our ambitions for Our People, Our Place. GM Moving is Greater Manchester’s shared plan to lead and support a social movement, where living an active life once again becomes the norm for people of all ages and backgrounds. We are looking forward to welcoming our national partners to learn together, inspire and support each other, and work towards a shared vision."
