HBG commences Darwin project

HBG begins work this month on the construction of Darwin Centre Phase Two at London's Natural History Museum.
The contract is worth £41m and construction is scheduled for completion in July 2008.
Darwin Centre Phase Two will be built on the west side of the Natural History Museum's site in South Kensington. It will join the Grade I listed Waterhouse Building with Darwin Centre Phase One to complete the Darwin Centre development.
Phase Two will house the Museum's collections of historically unique and scientifically irreplaceable insects and plants. It will include state-of-the-art laboratories and provide visitors with a fascinating insight into the Museum's research. It is scheduled to open to the public in late 2009.
Design is by the Danish firm C.F.Møller Architects and a key feature of the eight -storey building will be a sprayed-concrete 'cocoon' structure, which will be the largest of its type in the UK.
Finished with polished plaster, it will provide a constant temperature of 170c and relative humidity of 45 percent to protect 28 million insect and 3 million plant specimens from damage by fire, insect pests and fluctuating conditions.
It will also be able to accommodate 250 museum science staff, students and research visitors.
