Museum bringing Elgar to life

The Elgar Birthplace Museum, Worcestershire, in partnership with London-based e-learning specialist Replay, has commenced a long term new-media project designed to bring to life the story of England's best loved composer.
Using video, audio, text and animation, the Touchscreen Elgar Display (TED) will eventually include the entire life of Edward Elgar in a series of interactive kiosks, housed at his place of birth.
“Interactive Displays like TED make ideal exhibits in museum environments”, said Tim Copsey, new media producer for Replay. “Visitors can tailor their experience to suit their knowledge and curiosity.”
Museum director, Cathy Sloan, is also hopeful that the project will provide a window onto the museum's extensive archive, commenting: “We have a unique and internationally important collection.
“It ranges from Elgar's cycling maps to the original hand-written scores of some of his most important works. But limited display space, together with strict restrictions on the length of time items can be exposed to light, means that only a fraction of the archive is on display at any one time. The interactive displays will enable visitors to explore more of the collection.”
TED's developers are keen to ensure that the displays will not simply be a cold database of isolated artefacts.
“This is about story-telling and engagement”, said David Young, senior producer at Replay. “TED presents the life and times of Edward Elgar in a way never before possible. It tells the story of a fascinating character who lived a remarkable life.
“The fact that visitors will encounter this story in the place where Elgar was born, a place which was a source of inspiration throughout his life, will give the encounter great resonance.”
The first version of TED has recently been installed at the museum and the exhibit will evolve and develop over the next three years.
