Beverage innovation award winners announced

Innovation in products, packaging and ingredients in the beverages sector was awarded at a ceremony at the Casino de Madrid in March.

Organised by Zenith International Publishing through its Beverage Innovation magazine and website in partnership with UNESDA, the Union of European Beverages Associations, the awards were sponsored by public health and safety company NSF International, Frigoglass Ice Cold Merchandising and ingredients specialists FRS New Sun Nutrition.

The Best New Juice or Juice Drink prize was awarded to Compal of Portugal for its Essencial spherical bottle containing the equivalent of one portion of fruit. Other finalists in this category were the range of three Bom Dia Acai drinks from US based Bolthouse Farms and the Minute Maid range of AntiOx, Sojaplus, Duofrutas and Classicos produced by Coca-Cola Spain.

The Best New Functional Drink category was won by the fat burning drink Celsius of the US company Celsius Inc, with runners up Leading Brands in Canada gaining accolades for its Trek sports drink as well as UK based Firefly Tonics with its Health Kick formula.

The Best New Adult Drink section was won by the new Café Smooth iced coffee drink from Douwe Egberts of the Netherlands. Other finalists in this category were Coca-Cola for its cola coffee fusion Blak, Yagua Beauty tea from DSM Nutritional Products and Herbert's Iced Coffee from Metro Drinks UK.

In the Best New Children's Drink category, the winner was Conserve Italia with its Yoga Primo Nettare toddler juice. Close behind were PepsiCo's Tropicana Go and the UK's Innocent 10 per cent fruit Smoothies for Kids.

The winner of the Best New Brand or Business was The Berry Company for its healthy juice range, followed by Schweppes SA of Spain for its new brand t! incorporating green, black, red and white ready to drink teas.

Best Ingredient Innovation was an outright winner by the marula fruit tasted in Austria's Römerquelle flavoured water Emotion Marula. Second in this category was Afriplex of South Africa for its Rooibos Red Bush Tea extract, followed by AquaNova of Germany for its NovaSol Coenzyme Q10.

Best New Health Initiative was won by New Sun Nutrition for its FRS antioxidant health drink, followed jointly by Celsius Inc for its metabolism increasing drink Celsius and the Coca-Cola Company for its Envigacalorie burning drink with green tea extracts and caffeine. Next came Soya Health Foods UK with its Healthy Start breakfast drink.

The clear winner for the Best Sustainability Initiative was The Coca-Cola Company for its worldwide eKOrefreshment programme and HFC cooling technology. Second in this category was Innocent for its 100 per cent compostable PLA eco bottle. Third was Crown Holdings for its lightweight can SuperEnd.

The Best Packaging Innovation was the window pack for Ocean Spray chilled drinks from Gerber Juice Company in the UK. Second was the spherical fruit portion juice bottle and trio pack from Compal of Portugal for Essencial carrying the slogan 'Have you had your fruit today?'. These were followed by the Juice Republic range of cylindrical bottles entered by StrangeBrew and Demo Design & Mould's Bamboo PET bottle.

In the Best Marketing Campaign category, Schweppes SA won for its contemporary t! television advertisement, followed by Nudie of Australia for its 'Search for the biggest nudie addict' campaign. Other finalists include Coca-Cola Spain for its Minute Maid range and Coca-Cola Germany for its FIFA World Cup 2006 campaign.

Best Overall Concept was won by Compal of Portugal for its Essencial drink -each 110cl round bottle contains the equivalent of a fresh piece of fruit. Second was Coca-Cola Spain for its Minute Maid juice range as described above, followed by Römerquelle of Austria for Römerquelle Emotion Marula.
