SmartSlab® paving the way

SmartSlab® paving the way

From the unveiling in 2005 of a prototype for a revolutionary concept which combined architecture and multi-media transmission, the SmartSlab® is now available for a wide range of applications.

The SmartSlab, from the company of the same name, is a display solution for medium to large scale media applications. It can be used anywhere that a giant video display is required - this ranging from a few square metres up to 100 square metres and more - and can be used indoors and outdoors and on floors, walls and ceilings.

SmartSlab displays are created using tile-like modular components measuring 60cm x 60cm which are both a 'screen' and a structural construction product. Installation is quick and the displays can be used as either a permanent façade or a temporary structure, with digitised information being transmitted across the whole surface area.

SmartSlab has interactive capabilities, enabling connection with mobile phones and other Bluetooth/infrared devices and providing the potential for revenue generation from screen and music downloads. In addition, for audience monitoring purposes and dwell-time measurement, sensors embedded in the tiles can accurately gauge the length of time that people are looking at the display.

Content programming and management is said to be straightforward, with operations such as formatting visual images, multi-media presentations, video or web streaming, real-time camera feeds and public information, as well as scheduling content for specific times and dates, all capable of being implemented via an on-site or remote PC, or even a mobile phone.

The clarity of the visual images is achieved by SmartSlab's proprietary 'hexels'. Reported to be based on the biological structure of the fly's eye, the interlocking hexagonal LEDs have been proven to enhance visual recognition. Three display resolutions are available, to ensure that the digital image remains crisp and clear for all applications.

There are three different sized hexels, each designed to match the location in which a SmartSlab display is installed. 82mm is suited to elevated sites such as sports stadiums, whilst the 20mm is ideal for the proximity of an advertising hoarding or billboard and the 10mm best for close up displays.

From a practical point of view, the SmartSlab has been designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -40C to +40C and humidity levels of 0-95 per cent. The surface is vandal resistant and conventional damage, such as graffiti, can easily be removed.

Leisure applications for the system are numerous, it being suited at sporting events for uses such as perimeter barriers, scoreboards, live-action and replay screening, advertising and promotions. Event and entertainment venues - whether permanent or temporary - can use it to install stages, exhibits, dance floors, backdrops and interactive screens.

Elsewhere, the company sees massive potential in the retail sector for branding and merchandising, special promotions (including mobile connectivity), entertainment as well as safety information, and eye-catching shop windows.
