Asturiana de Laminados, the Spanish zinc producer, was selected by Architect Jaime Bartolome of GilBartolomé Architects for the specific characteristics of its elZinc material. Casa Acantilado (the house on the cliff) is sited on a steep slope in Salobreña, on Granada´s coast. It is built into the cliff and protected by a curved, single-span reinforced concrete roof slab, covered with zinc scales. The effect is to play with the land’s geometry and the zinc-scaled roof might suggest the waves of the sea. The light weight of elZinc, as well as its special malleability allowed for the hand forming of the scales. The material naturally develops a protective, corrosion-resistant patina with changing tones, and needs minimal maintenance.
