Eness installs interactive light emitting panel at the paediatric ward in Cabrini Hospital
Award-winning Australian multimedia design company Eness has released a wall panel that transforms ordinary surfaces into creative, interactive spaces.
Its light-emitting wood, Lumes, is the first of its kind to integrate new media into the built form.
The first panel has been installed at the entrance of Cabrini Hospital’s Paediatrics Ward in Victoria, Australia and was designed to make children feel at ease.
The animation on display at the hospital has a child-friendly design and features falling raindrops, animals peeking from behind grass, launching rockets and runners chasing human movements. The animation is customisable and can be adapted to suit the customer’s needs following installation.
The technology is not just aesthetically pleasing but also potentially functional, as the panels may provide an effective alternative to traditional directional signage.
Eness envisions Lumes forming immersive environments in a range of architectural projects including: commerical, tourism, hospitality and retail spaces.
Andrea Rindt, Cabrini Hospital’s nurse director for Women and Children, said: “Our goal was to maximise the space with interactive experiences that children could intuitively use.”
Lumes uses motion-activated sensors to trigger animation and can detect distances, responding with larger animations as people get closer.
Eness are hoping to further develop the technology so that animation will respond to heat and sound as well as touch and motion, and will also be expanding its material palette beyond wood, canvas and acrylic.
