Taking the tube to perfect skiing

Cross-country skiing enthusiasts in the west of Sweden are no longer at the mercy of fickle weather conditions thanks to a selection of Alfa Laval evaporators, condensers and dry coolers which maintain the temperature of a unique snow tunnel at the correct temperature all year round.

The 1.3km-long Fortum Ski Tunnel in Torsby, Sweden is cooled to a constant -1˚C to -2˚C, the tunnel providing two parallel tracks with a permanent coating of snow varying in depth from 300-700 mm.

The secret is in the tunnel’s construction, with its concrete roof being covered by a layer of closed-cell insulation and the floor having a sub-layer of 200mm thick Styrofoam to keep the snow cool and dry.

The cooling system supplies liquid via under-floor tubing to cool the floor and air cooling to cool the roof. This maintains the interior temperature at a steady -1˚C to -2˚C.

The Fortum Tunnel is cooled by two chill containers housed at either end of the tunnel. Both contain the system which creates and distributes the snow - in the form of tiny dry ice crystals - and for cooling and maintaining the environment at the optimum temperature.

The total cooling capacity provided is 1500kW, although the actual output required for everyday operation is 850kW.

This spare capacity is destined to be taken up in the future when the operators of the ski tunnel intend to expand their operation to include an 800m track alongside the existing tunnel.
