Domenech and Dow create premier league pitch

The Francisco Laporta Stadium in Alcoy, Spain, has got the first football pitch in the country to be backed with 100 percent polyurethane.

Doménech Hermanos and The Dow Chemical Company teamed up to create an artificial turf that offers a playing surface reported to provide high-performance benefits throughout the value chain - from the manufacturer to installers to end-users.

The stadium consists of a full-size football pitch, a five-a-side football pitch and an athletic track and is the home of football teams CD Alcoyano B (first regional division) and the Alcoyano First and Second League Youth Teams.

Manufactured by local company, Doménech Hermanos, the artificial turf system at Francisco Laporta was selected for its strength and high-performance capabilities. It's designed to be highly resistant to wear and tear and also virtually eliminates the possibility of 'balloons' of water accumulating under the pitch, thereby reducing construction problems.

Chosen for its improved feel, the turf was made with multidirectional fibre, with a denier value of 12,500 and height of 60+ milimetres. In addition, it received a secondary backing made with ENFORCER™ Sport polyurethane system from Dow.

The company has designed its polyurethane backings to provide a range of benefits including improved durability, strong tuft bind even when wet, and a stable, uniform playing field. The system provides further benefits in the manufacturing process also, being - said Emilio Doménech, owner and CEO of Doménech Hermanos - "very strong yet light and attaching to the turf fibres like no other secondary backing we've worked with".

The installation team approved of it as well. Continued Domenech: "We had only positive comments from them.

"The extending of the rolls, the cutting of edges and the glueing of joints was easier than with other turf systems.

"The combination of primary backing, yarn and secondary polyurethane backing has resulted in a pitch that has delighted both stadium owners and players."
