Fitness First claims health club top spot
POSTED 10 Oct 2005 . BY
Fitness First claims that it is now the largest operator of wholly-owned health and fitness clubs in the world.

The group, which was founded by Mike Balfour, now boasts 424 clubs in 15 countries and is opening approximately 38 clubs a year around the world.

The company claims to have overtaken Bally Total Fitness, which it says has 411 clubs, to become the largest owner and operator of health clubs.

Fitness First has more than 1.1 million members worldwide, with a turnover of more than £400m generated from 166 clubs in the UK, 172 in Continental Europe, 44 in Asia and 42 in Australia.

The company has also announced that it has become an associate member of the Associate Parliamentary Health Group.

The cross-party group works closely with parliamentarians, the NHS and the wider health sector to provide MPs and Peers with information about national and local health issues.

Fitness First will share its insight into developments occurring in the health and fitness sector, and its views on health awareness and preventative care provision in the UK.
