Plans to develop a reportedly US$325m (£186m, 273m euro) ski resort in India’s Kullu Valley have encountered strong opposition from local interest groups.
The five-star Himalayan Ski Village was scheduled for completion in 2009 following approval from the Virbhadra Singh government.
Plans are now on hold following a convention – organized by the Indian opposition BJP party – where 400 elders voted against the development due to fears that the local environment will be destroyed and water courses polluted. The region is also home to sacred mountains.
The project’s innovator – Alfred Ford of ABF International – had already signed a memorandum of understanding with the Himachel government for the ski development.
If approved, the ski resort is thought to comprise 600 hotel rooms, 300 villas, 150 condos, a handicraft centre, restaurants and spa facilities in a 50-acre site on a 99-year lease from the government. Details: www.himalayanskivillage.com
