Two Western Lowland Gorillas have moved into Adelaide Zoo in South Australia as part of the international zoo-based management for the endangered species.
The gorillas have been temporarily transferred from Taraonga Zoo in Sydney and will continue on to a European Zoo later in the year.
The two female gorillas are on their way to join an unrelated family group, as they would in the wild.
A spokesperson for the zoo said: “One of the main objectives of Adelaide Zoo hosting the two gorillas – Anguka and Safiri – is to highlight the threats facing wild gorilla populations.
“We hope that by informing the South Australian community of these threats we can help provide solutions through direct action and financial support to organisations such as the Bushmeat Campaign which is trying to stop this cruel trade.”
