£60m tourist tower planned for Birmingham
POSTED 27 Mar 2006 . BY
Plans for a 175m-tall (575ft) attraction have been unveiled for Birmingham, UK, by ROC International Towers.

If planning permission is granted, the £60m Birmingham Pinnacle – which would become the city’s tallest building – would boast theme park-style thrill rides, a restaurant and bar and an observation deck.

At ground level, a 5,000sq m (54,000sq ft) commercial development would surround a courtyard featuring leisure, fitness and entertainment facilities as well as bars and restaurants and retail outlets.

Richard Pawley, chair of ROC, said: “We have identified a unique opportunity in Birmingham for the development of a major destination attraction. The leisure market is set to grow steadily over the next few years and the challenge for us has been to find innovative ways to capture people’s imagination.”

The rides within the tower – which will be located next to Millennium Point – will include a freefall parachute drop, a flight trainer over the edge of the 300ft-high terrace, a gyro ride to the highest point of the tower, a bungee drop ride, a giant drop ride and a high-level seesaw ride.

Once planning is secured, the tower, which has been designed by Associated Architects, should open within two years.

Pawley said the Birmingham Pinnacle should attract a million visitors in its first year and claimed that the tower could be the first of several such attractions.

“While this would be the first tower of is kind in Europe, the concept is attracting interest in other parts of the world,” he said. “I anticipate we will be announcing plans for similar ventures all around the globe in the near future.”
