EU having a 'positive influence' on sport in the UK
POSTED 19 Feb 2014 . BY Tom Walker
Back to Hockey will be roll-out in September to increase participation
The European Union (EU) has had a "positive influence" on sport in the UK, according to a report by the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS).

The EU's impact on UK sport was increased when it was granted a supporting and coordinating role in sports matters by the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. Since then it has influenced a wide range of sports-related policies and recommendations.

The Review of the Balance of Competences between the United Kingdom and the European Union Culture, Tourism and Sport report states that part of the positive influence of the EU rulings and recommendations is down to the UK's active involvement in the EU's working groups of sport.

Of the six EU Expert Groups on sport, the UK chairs three - Good Governance in Sport; Sustainable Financing of Sport; and Education and Training in Sport.

The groups aim to produce recommendations that will guide the action of sports organisations across the EU, taking into account the evidence and good practice derived from existing projects.

The DCMS report also cites the benefit of EU funding on UK sport, which can be used to create new networks and deliver larger projects.
