An abandoned German theme park that has been derelict for 13 years could soon be rescued from disrepair after the city of Berlin purchased its land lease.

The city has bought the 30 hectare site for a reported €2m ($2.75m £1.66m), although the purchase must yet be approved by Berlin's House of Representatives.

The bankrupt Spreepark attraction, situated on the outskirts of the city, was originally built in 1969 and featured as a popular attraction in the east of the country.

The park remained in existence after the reunification of Germany, but ran into trouble in the late 1990s when its owner experienced difficulties keeping it afloat following criminal and insolvency issues.

It now sits as a derelict site frequented by adventurous photographers and those paying €15 (US$20, £12) to be given a tour of the abandoned facilities.

The park was famously listed on auction site eBay last year, with the previous lease on the land stating that it could only be used as an amusement park until 2061.

Details are yet to be confirmed as to what the city plans to do with the park having purchased the lease for the land it occupies.
