The fast-progressing Crossrail development at London's Canary Wharf is to bring a new leisure and retail centre, with 100,000sq ft (9,290sq m) of consumer-enticing space, a rooftop park and a community facility on offer.

The project is nearing completion with the final piece of a timber lattice roof having been lowered into place, which is to partially cover the complex’s green space roof-top offering.

Once complete, the development will be home to shops, restaurants, bars and a cinema, as well as housing the Crossrail facility.

The first phase of the development, inclusive of the leisure space and roof-top garden, is due to open in May 2015, three years prior to when Crossrail is due to be operational.

The site has been created by a team made up of a number of architects and professionals, including Canary Wharf Contractors Limited and architects Tony Meadows Associates, Adamson Associates and Foster + Partners.

Landscape architecture has been designed by Gillespies, while Arup Engineering is serving to manage structural and building aspects at the site.

The station and leisure development makes use of translucent, eco-efficient materials, encouraging the community to look inside and interact with the new facility.

The introduction of Crossrail to the region has also spurred a number of other projects in the area, with Canary Wharf set to become home to a health club and spa, alongside the site's first residential tower since the development was originally conceived in 1990.
