Trade union members operating under the Glasgow Life banner are planning to walk out in a dispute over overtime pay and shift patterns – with the strike set to go ahead during the opening week of the Commonwealth Games.

The industrial action – which will affect museums and leisure centres in Glasgow – will take place with the city packed to the rafters, as spectators and athletes seek to visit attractions outside of the Games.

Glasgow Life has more than 2,000 staff members who operate the council’s publicly-owned leisure centres, libraries and museums.

“The unions met late on Friday to plan industrial action for the week beginning July 21,” said Unison City of Glasgow branch secretary Brian Smith, speaking to local news outlet the Evening Times.

"The unions remain willing to talk to Glasgow Life in an effort to resolve the dispute, however the employer has not made contact with us.

"This is a situation that will affect the Commonwealth Games. You'd think they'd want to cut a deal."
