The Camelback ski resort in Pennsylvania is planning to build a massive indoor waterpark, resort and spa development costing US$163m (€125.1m, £99.3m) – the largest expansion in the history of the resort.

The three acre Aquatopia Indoor Waterpark on Camelback Mountain will operate all year round and will be the largest indoor water facility on the east coast. The park will feature seven pools, 13 water slides, a surfing simulator, interactive water play centres, private cabanas and a swim up bar.

Also included in the ski in/ski out resort will be a 553,000sq ft (51,375sq m) 453-bedroom hotel and will include an adult and a kids spa, fitness centre and 20,000sq ft (1,858sq m) of meeting space. An additional 30,000sq ft (2,787sq m) family entertainment center complete with arcade, indoor ropes course, nine-hole mini-golf, laser tag arena, bowling, laser maze is also included in the plans.

The five treatment room Del Sol Spa at Camelback Resort will offer a range of manicures/pedicures, body wraps, facials and massages, while the Poconos day spa is also included.

Le Petite Oasis Kids Spa is tailored towards younger guests and will make the spa treatment “fun”, offering pedicures, manicures, facials and hair extensions in a “cool and trendy environment”.

“The travel and tourism industry is always evolving,” said Arthur Berry III, co-owner of Camelback Resort. “The Poconos has always been a popular destination, but the landscape has changed and so has the audience segment. What was once a sleepy honeymoon destination is now a destination filled with excitement and adventure catering to both outdoor enthusiasts and families.”

Work on the development started in September 2013, with the resort planned to open in Q2 of 2015.
