Paralympic gold medallist David Weir will cut the ribbon on a brand new £250,000 strength and conditioning facility at St Mary’s University in Twickenham on 27 November.

St Mary’s has established itself as one of London’s top-performing sports institutions, delivering educational and training provision to students, elite athletes, sports teams and members of the community.

The new facility has been developed in response to increased demand and will be used for both teaching and service delivery in the areas of strength and conditioning, rehabilitation and health related exercise. It incorporates a combination of both training and laboratory equipment for the assessment of force production, movement technique and muscle function. It will also provide opportunities for students to merge their academic and applied development, whilst also providing training services for all levels of performer, from students and members of the community right through to elite athletes.

The new strength and conditioning facility features equipment from a number of suppliers. Sportesse supplied some of the strength equipment, along with Pullum Sport, while Cybex provided the cardio equipment and EXF the racks, rig and flooring.

Paralympic Gold medallist David Weir, who regularly trains at St Mary’s, will deliver a question and answer session and officially unveil the new performance education centre.

St Mary’s MSc Strength and Conditioning Science programme director Jon Goodwin said: “Students on applied programmes related to human performance can now develop in an environment that encourages them to be creative, reflective and evidence led.

“The facilities also enable us to provide more complete and integrated service delivery to athletes than ever before.”
