Henning Larsen Architects is hoping to create an iconic new landmark in Gothenburg, Sweden, after winning an international design competition.

The Danish company’s proposal includes an “accessible and transparent” mixed-use plaza at ground level, as well as two commercial towers. The larger tower is expected to be 30-storeys high, and so will become a prominent part of the skyline in Sweden’s second-largest city.

“It is our vision to create a building with functional diversity – that is, a building containing a variety of programmes for different user interests, providing restaurants, cafés, culture, retail, and a gym in addition to the commercial spaces,” said Henning Larsen partner and design responsible architect Søren Øllgaard.

“This ensures life in and around the building at all times, and we have positive experiences with this strategy from other commercial building projects.”

Skanska Fastigheter Göteborg initiated the design competition and, in addition to Henning Larsen, invited White Arkitekter and Reflex Arkitekter to participate.

The jury report emphasised the daylight qualities, organisational flexibility and rich design of the building volumes and facades of Henning Larsen Architects’ proposals.

No construction schedule has been announced, but a Henning Larsen spokesperson said further planning and development would now take place based on its winning design.
