The director of Europa City – one of the largest ongoing leisure developments on the continent – has told CLAD how the scheme can bolster the Paris bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In an exclusive interview, Christophe Dalstein said the €3.1bn (US$3.5bn, £2.4bn) Europa City – which has been masterplanned by Bjarke Ingels Group – will be perfectly placed near the proposed Olympic venues in northern Paris to become a leisure and holiday destination for visitors travelling to enjoy the Games.

“Europa City could be a space where the Olympics and its values could really come to life,” Dalstein said. “Our global, dynamic project can enhance the value of the Paris bid for the Games in 2024, which will coincide with our opening date.”

Dalstein said that a 5,000-capacity sports facility planned for the scheme could host Olympic events, while the city’s abundance of leisure facilities – which will include a theme park, an urban farm, a waterpark, restaurants, theatres, shops, bars and hotels – will provide “an exciting destination for both tourists and Paris residents.”

“We have been exchanging exciting ideas with Olympic committee and the kinds of public event we could welcome,” he said. “We are very willing to create an amazing community spirit, as there was in London for the 2020 Games, by bringing people together in a popular dimension. We could really make this the ‘People's Olympics’".

New metro links will mean it takes people 24 minutes to travel between Europa City and Paris and just six minutes to reach Charles de Gaulle Airport.

Public consultations about the masterplan will take place between March and June and the plans are expected to be finalised by 2017.

Paris, which has previously hosted two Games, is competing against Budapest, Rome and Los Angeles for the 2024 event. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will choose the successful city in September 2017.
