The Nordic nations are lining up an historic bid for the UEFA European Championships, which could see up to six countries hosting matches.

A statement made by the Danish Football Association revealed that a bid for the 2024 or 2028 iteration of the tournament is likely to be made by Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland in collaboration, with Iceland and the Faroe Islands also being involved.

According to the statement, the bid will be based on “volunteers for football, sustainability both economically and environmentally and football’s importance to the wellbeing of children”.

“The Nordic countries share common values in many ways and want together to focus on joint-hosting a European Championship finals,” said the statement. “We also want to hold as many matches in a sustainable way that is responsible both economically and environmentally.”

While the bidding process for the tournaments does not kick off until 2018, the nations are making “initial preparations”.

France will host the next edition of the championships this summer, while Euro 2020 will take place in several locations across Europe to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the tournament. Of the Nordic nations, only Denmark will host matches during the tournament in its Telia Parken stadium in Copenhagen.

Denmark won the European Championships in 1992 when it was hosted in fellow Nordic nation, Sweden.
