British Cycling’s female membership base has grown to its highest-ever level – although women still only account for less than a fifth of members.

The number of female members has hit the 20,000 mark for the first time ever as a result of the governing body’s women’s strategy, which was established in 2013. The figure represents a 139 per cent increase since London 2012.

However, the number of female British Cycling members accounts for only a fraction (16 per cent) of the organisation’s member base of 125,000.

Of the 20,000 members, 45 per cent have race licences, which entitle them to take part in competitive events around the country, while 52 per cent and 3 per cent have a Ride Membership and Fan Membership package respectively.

The average age of female members is 39 – three years younger than the male base.

Now, more than 250,000 women cycling regularly. In addition, the number of female coaches has surged by 70 per cent.
