More than 10,000 people have signed up to volunteer at the Los Angeles 2024 Olympic Games, should the city be successful in its bid to host.

If Los Angeles does win the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) backing, the 10,000 who have signed up already will have first priority to take part.

Gene Sykes, the chief executive of LA 2024, said the interest had shown that the bid was “already fostering a legacy of Olympic volunteerism”.

“By channeling LA’s widespread public support for the Games into volunteerism, we’ll leave a meaningful bid legacy in all of LA’s communities,” he added.

An independent poll found that 88 per cent of people living in Los Angeles supported its bid for the Olympics.

Separately, a number of professional sports leagues have given their backing to the bid.

Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) are all supportive of the campaign.

According to the bid organisers, LA 2024 would “leverage the professional sports leagues’ read-made connections to existing fan bases and global youth market”.

“LA 2024 is honoured to earn the broad support from MLS, MLB and NFL in addition to our support from the NBA and WNBA,” said LA 2024 chair Casey Wasserman.

“The widespread support is demonstrative of LA 2024’s potential to engage new and dynamic partners to benefit the Olympic and Paralympic movements for decades to come.”
