Garmin launches screen-free Cirqa Smart Band

Garmin has expanded its wearable portfolio with the launch of the Cirqa Smart Band, a screen-free fitness tracker designed to provide continuous health and activity monitoring while minimising digital distractions.

Unlike many health wearables that rely on a display or recurring subscription, the Cirqa Smart Band collects health and fitness data around the clock and syncs it to the Garmin Connect app, where users can review insights into their health, sleep and training. No subscription is required to access the device's core features.

The wearable offers up to 10 days' of battery life and is available with a choice of fabric bands that can be worn on either the wrist or upper arm. Garmin says the minimalist design is intended for people who want health tracking without the constant notifications associated with a smartwatch.

The device measures a range of physiological metrics, including heart rate, Body Battery energy levels, stress, skin temperature, Pulse Ox, respiration and sleep quality.

Sleep analysis includes sleep stages, heart rate variability, sleep score, nap detection and recovery insights, while women's health features include menstrual cycle and pregnancy tracking. Skin temperature data can also be used with the Natural Cycles fertility app, which requires a separate subscription.

For fitness users, Cirqa automatically detects and records activities, with Garmin saying its classification accuracy improves over time as users confirm or edit workouts within the app. More than 80 activities can also be tracked manually, including running, walking and yoga.

Performance-focused metrics include training readiness, VO2 max, HRV status, training status, recovery time and workout benefit. The smart band can also connect to a compatible smartphone for GPS tracking during outdoor activities and supports Garmin's LiveTrack feature, allowing friends and family to follow a user's location in real time.

Garmin's launch of the screen-free CIRQA Smart Band signals a direct challenge to Whoop in one of the fastest-growing segments of the wearable technology market.

While Garmin never mentions its rival by name, the similarities are difficult to ignore. Like Whoop, CIRQA has no screen, is designed to be worn continuously, tracks sleep, recovery, heart rate variability (HRV) and training readiness, and can be worn on the wrist or upper arm. Both products are aimed at users who want detailed physiological insights without the distractions of a smartwatch.

The key point of differentiation is Garmin's business model. Whereas Whoop pioneered the subscription-based wearable, Garmin has chosen to include its health and performance analytics with the purchase price. By repeatedly highlighting that no subscription is required, Garmin is making a clear statement that consumers should not have to pay a monthly fee to access recovery and health data.

Garmin also brings a significant ecosystem advantage. Millions of existing Garmin users can add Cirqa to complement, rather than replace, their smartwatch, allowing them to wear a discreet tracker while sleeping, exercising or in situations where a watch is impractical, with all data feeding into Garmin Connect.

The launch also reflects a broader shift in the wearables market. As health monitoring moves beyond step counting towards continuous measurement of recovery, sleep quality and physiological resilience, manufacturers are increasingly recognising that some consumers want comprehensive health insights without another screen demanding their attention.

For the fitness industry, Cirqa reinforces the growing importance of passive health monitoring and recovery as core components of the consumer wellness proposition. It also raises the competitive stakes for Whoop, which must continue to demonstrate that its subscription model delivers sufficient additional value as larger players with established ecosystems enter the screen-free wearables category.

Garmin's decision to offer comparable health and recovery insights without a subscription could increase pressure on rivals as the market continues to evolve.
