Nusta Spa, in Washington DC, has introduced a new ‘green’ concept in its design and become the first day spa in the US to be accepted into the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) for its commercial interiors programme.
Elizabeth Snowdon, founder of Nusta, has been working closely with Kendall Wilson – a partner at Washington-based architects, Envision Design – to create a green space that utilises materials based on sustainable design.
Design highlights of the 5,000sq ft space include energy efficient lighting that incorporates ultra-high-efficiency adjustable LED lights and energy efficient heating and ventilation system.
The furnishing at the spa – which opened in May this year – is provided by Knoll International and Herman Miller, while the carpeting contains over 50 per cent recycled content.
Kendall Wilson said: “Our vision for Nusta was to combine a sophisticated design concept with the highest standards of sustainability.
“We used rapidly renewable and recycled materials that are manufactured in an environmentally friendly way – free of harmful chemicals and volatile organic compounds.”
