Plans have been revealed to redevelop the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, into a mixed-use complex dominated by four towers rising from the stands.

Designed by architects Moederscheim Moonen, the proposals include expanding the capacity at the stadium from 4,300 to 6,500 to seats, while creating a number of other services – from housing and retail to offices and leisure.

The Van Donge & De Roo Stadium is currently the home of S.B.V. Excelsior football club, which is looking to work together with city officials to create a landmark project at the site.

"The plan not only consists of the expansion and modernization of the stadium, but also responds to the major housing project facing the city," Moederscheim Moonen said in a statement.

"Extra facilities will be created for commercial and social purposes and the plan includes a large multifunctional area around the stadium, bringing together residential, sporting, fitness, meeting and health spaces.

"This results in a remarkable multifunctional building which will become a special landmark in the east of the city."

A spokesperson for the club added: "An important objective of the submitted development plan is to generate non-football related income for the club – we want to realise a future-proof and robust revenue model for the coming decades.

"The future stadium renovation will also symbolise the way in which Excelsior manifests itself in Rotterdam society and the surrounding neighbourhoods – by being committed and focused on an elite sports experience.

"In the coming months, we will produce more detailed plans and designs. The time line of development will depend on a number of factors, but we expect it to take several years."
