Destination spa and wellness operator Miraval Resorts & Spas has revealed plans to open its fourth Life in Balance Spa in the US. The new facility will be located at Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in San Diego, California, and open in early 2023.

The spa will be realised following a complete redesign of the resort’s existing 15,000sq ft wellness facility, conducted by Wimberly Interiors. Once complete, the project will mark the final phase of a US$60m (€58.8m, £49.7m) resort-wide renovation at the five-star Carlsbad resort.

The full-service Life in Balance Spa concept is the centrepiece of each of Miraval’s three full-scale resort and spa destinations in Tucson, Arizona; Austin, Texas; and Lenox, Massachusetts.

“The world needs wellbeing now more than ever, making this the perfect time to expand the Miraval Resorts & Spas portfolio,” said Susan Santiago, head of Miraval Resorts.

“Our Life in Balance Spa experiences create a sanctuary for guests to pause, rejuvenate and reflect as they find balance in their lives.”

A Californian wellness escape
According to Miraval, the new spa’s design will harmonise natural materials and local building methods to create a space that is both refined and elemental.

Spa guests will find polished finishes and sleek edges softened by worn, distressed materials and natural textures throughout the destination. Miraval anticipates this will result in a spa with an unpretentious contemporary style rooted in the culture and natural environment of Southern California.

The space will also be populated with crystals, cairns and mandalas to create a re-energising haven for relaxation and personal reflection.

The spa will feature 20 indoor and outdoor treatment rooms where spa practitioners will perform signature Miraval treatments inspired by global healing techniques.

Plans also include a spa pool for a sensory deprivation treatment, Vasudhara, and a large room with hanging yoga silks for the Miraval’s take on Thai massage, Naga Thai.

In addition, the Life in Balance Spa will offer a fitness centre for signature Miraval exercise classes, a studio for yoga and meditation classes, a lounge for personal reflection and a retail space where guests can purchase products used in their services.

The offerings will be complemented by a daily schedule of activities ranging from wellness counselling, nutrition classes, culinary workshops and outdoor pursuits to sound bathing, chakra balancing and meditation.

In addition, plans are underway to integrate select wellness activities and Miraval culinary programming for Park Hyatt Aviara groups looking to incorporate mindfulness practices into their retreats.

Miraval Life in Balance Spa memberships will be available for community members interested in exploring the brand’s holistic approach to wellness.

Alongside plans for the new spa, Park Hyatt Aviara has been upgraded with redesigned guestrooms; a reimagined lobby; two new pool experiences; an interactive Topgolf Swing Suite; 80,000sq ft of upgraded indoor and outdoor event spaces; and five culinary and bar experiences.
