Global health club revenues hit US$84bn: IHRSA report
POSTED 05 Jun 2015 . BY Jak Phillips
The IHRSA report covers almost 70 health club markets
Health clubs worldwide brought in total revenue of more than US$84bn (€74m, £55m) in 2014, as established markets continued to perform and emerging regions saw growth, according to a new IHRSA report.

The 2015 IHRSA Global Report: The State of the Health Club Industry examines the performance of health clubs in nearly 70 markets worldwide, covering 180,000 clubs and 144.7 million members. It shows that the US, Germany and the UK remain the largest markets in terms of members, with rising star Brazil occupying fourth spot.

Health club performance is also robust in the Asia-Pacific. Thirteen markets in the region attract 17 million members (excluding the Middle East). However, there is room for growth as the average member penetration rate in the Asia-Pacific region is just 3.8 per cent. Larger cities in Asia, including Beijing, Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, are home to maturing industries, while future growth is anticipated in growing cities across the continent.

“The IHRSA Global Report offers the most comprehensive overview of health club markets worldwide, providing topline statistics on nearly 70 markets,” said Jay Ablondi, IHRSA's executive vice president of global products. “Leading markets continue to post strong performance indicators, while emerging markets are poised for growth.”
