Former world's fittest man to raise awareness of health and fitness in Africa
POSTED 14 Jul 2004 . BY
Joe Decker, formerly the world's fittest man, embarks on a trip to East Africa this month (July) in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of health and fitness.

The ultra-endurance athlete, health club operator, motivational speaker and author has been invited to share his knowledge and experience with audiences in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

During his three-week tour, Decker will be talking to heads of state, health club operators and other parties concerned with health and fitness – particularly those working with children – to encourage physical activity.

Decker said that while there are still many East Africans struggling to feed themselves, there is also a growing number of people who live inactive and sedentary lives. The authorities want to increase activity levels within the three countries and are considering holding 10km races between them.

To win the title of world's fittest man, Decker broke the Guinness World Record for a 24-hour physical fitness challenge in 2000 in which he cycled 100 miles, ran 10 miles, hiked 10 miles, power-walked five miles, kayaked six miles, skied on a Nordic track 10 miles, rowed 10 miles, swam two miles, did 3,000 abdominal crunches, 1,100 jumping jacks, 1,000 leg lifts, 1,100 push-ups and weight-lifted, cumulatively, 278,540 pounds.
