Period Clothing - 20th Century

Clothing styles and fashions went through a dramatic change over time. But fashion never changed as rapidly and dramatically as during the 20th century. Each decade developed its own distinct style which, however, had a major influence on fashion trends to the present day.

Fashion and Clothing Style in the 1920s

The 1920s saw a major revolution in both men’s and women’s fashion. Most women adopted the flapper look that was the predominant style throughout the decade. Men, on the other hand, replaced long jackets with short ones and began wearing loose baggy trousers known as the Oxford bags.

1930s Fashion

Clothing in the 1930s became more conservative again. Women gave up the flapper look and began wearing clothing that complemented feminine curves. Men’s fashion in the 3rd decade of the 20th century was influenced greatly by The Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) whose style of clothing was adopted and popularised by Hollywood film stars such as Cary Grant and Fred Astaire.

Fashion in the 1950s

In the mid-20th century, the fashion industry focused on young population for the very first time in history. The 1950s young men and women rejected the style of their parents and developed their own style of clothing which reflected the rebellious teenage spirit.

Fashion in the 1960s

The 1960s were a period of major changes in the world of fashion. The decade saw the introduction of miniskirts, space look, bell-bottomed trousers and hippie look that was adopted by both men and women, and exerted a huge influence on the 1970s fashion.

1980s Clothing Style and Fashion Trends

The 1980s clothing styles are probably as diverse as all 20th century clothing styles combined. Men’s and women’s clothing preferences depended greatly on which subculture they belonged to or identified themselves with. As a whole, however, the 1980s fashion is remembered for the big hair and tight bottom clothing that was worn with loose, oversized T-shirts and sweaters.
